Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White will go before a judge today for sentencing on six felony charges. A jury convicted White earlier this month for submitting a false voter registration application, two perjury counts, voting in another precinct, casting a false ballot and theft. The jury found White not guilty of the most serious felony charge, fraud on a financial institution.
Governor Mitch Daniels has appointed Jerry Bonnet interim secretary of state. Bonnet had been serving as chief deputy. The governor says a permanent appointment depends on whether Judge Steve Nation will lessen White's verdict on some of the counts to misdemeanors. Such a move may allow White to be reinstated to office.
The sentencing is today at 3 o'clock in the Hamilton Superior Court.
