The Indiana State Police says it is increasing seat belt patrols in Owen and Green Counties beginning Friday. Officials say the move is part of the Rural Demonstration Project.
The effort aims to increase seat belt use in rural counties with the highest fatality rates due to crashes where the victim was not wearing a seat belt.
According to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, 64 percent of the state's total traffic fatalities occurred on rural roadways during 2011. ISP is partnering with 24 other Indiana law enforcement agencies and patrols will continue through May 17.
