An advisory committee will meet after the New Year to determine the best way to spend millions of dollars won through a settlement dealwith Volkswagen.
Gov. Eric Holcomb established the 11-member team in October.
Indiana will get roughly $41 millionafter the car manufacturer lied about emissions standards on their vehicles. The compensation is part of the largest civil settlement in automobile history.
Shawn Seals is a senior environmental manager at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. He says an IDEM group is collecting public comment and will update the advisory committee at the beginning of January.
"We'll be well prepared to kind of sit down and orient them with the background of Volkswagen, as well as where we expect or envision the future," Seals says.
The VW settlement stipulates the money states receive must be used to decrease damages caused by diesel. Seals says a lot of options are on the table.
"In a general sense, the majority of these projects are either engine replacements or vehicle replacement projects," he says. "Then, in some cases, it goes into a little different technology."
Seals says the public can keep up with the process on the IDEM website.
