The Indiana Department of Transportation is moving forward with the possibility of tolling four different interstates.
This comes after INDOT chose the infrastructure solutions firm HNTB earlier this week as its preferred candidate to create a new strategic plan.
The plan will help provide a traffic analysis and environmental studies to see if tolling would be beneficial and bring in revenue for the state long-term.
INDOT spokesperson Scott Manning says they're looking into tolling major travel areasof the state like I-65, I-70, I-94 NW and I-69. Manning says the strategic plan is the next step in a long process.
"So any decision on whether to move forward and when to move forward is still probably more of long term decision and wouldn't be something that would happen in the short term," he says.
Manning says they have two to three weeks to negotiate a contract with HNTB before developing the strategic plan can take place.
"But there's a lot we still have left to learn about how a tolling system on a statewide scale would function, how we would implement something like that," Manning says. "We're still very much in the process in trying to figure out whether this makes sense for Indiana."
The plan is due to the legislative council by Dec. 1.
