A new game bird habitat is planned on the site of a former state prison farm. Governor Mitch Daniels made the announcement Wednesday saying the move will expand game preserves and establish a large scale conservation program in northwestern Indiana.
The land was scheduled to be auctioned off but Daniels decided to transfer it to the Department of Natural Resources instead. The DNR will manage the 1,250 acre property aiming to restore a grassland habitat that is ideal for game birds like pheasant and quail.
The land is valued at more than $5 million.
