Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Catholic diocese says the Trump administration's policy of separating families at the border is "very disturbing."
Rhoades issued a statement Wednesday in response to the controversial policy.
"The unnecessary separation of children from their parents is immoral, uncompassionate, and harmful to children. In addition, I strongly disagree with the Attorney General's decision not to allow asylum for those seeking protection from domestic or gang violence," Rhoades said. "Throughout our nation's history, such protection has saved many lives and demonstrated our nation's compassion for the vulnerable and persecuted."
Rhoades is encouraging Hoosiers to contact elected officials and ask them to pass legislation ending the separation policy.
Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-Ind.) is supporting a measure that would halt the policy. And Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) announced Wednesday he will support a broader measure from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.).

Rhoades said the regulation of borders must be balanced with the rights of vulnerable migrants.
"Let us pray to the Holy Family for migrant families today, compelled to leave their homelands because of violence, extreme poverty, or persecution, who are exposed to grave danger," he said. "May the Lord protect them and may the Lord inspire our nation to exercise justice and compassion."
