Tanoos To Serve Final Day As Vigo Co. Schools Superintendent

Vigo County schools will have a new superintendent starting next week.

Current Superintendent Danny Tanoos announced his retirement in February of this year. His last day in the position is June 30. Replacing him is Rob Haworth, former superintendent of Elkhart Community Schools.

Tanoos says he thinks Haworth has the skills necessary to serve the district.

"He's had great experiences in a large school system, and I have faith that he'll come in and do what we need to do to take the school system to the next level," Tanoos says.

Congratulations to our new superintendent, Dr. Rob Haworth. Looking forward to his leadership. — Danny Tanoos (@dannytanoos) June 12, 2018

Tanoos' retirement comes as Vigo County schools are approaching a referendum to renovate the district's high schools. He says he felt he couldn't stay through the lengthy process.

"That's my main purpose for retiring," Tanoos says. "It's something that I just don't feel I would have been able to see from start to completion, because it will probably take a five-year period."

And an FBI investigation from 2016 concluded this past December. It found two former Vigo County school officials guilty in a multi-year kickback scheme that federal authorities say cost the district more than $100,000.

Tanoos has served as superintendent for 20 years, and worked in the Vigo County School Corporation for several years before that. He says leaving is bittersweet.

"It's very emotional," Tanoos says. "Perhaps more than I thought it might be."

Tanoos will stay on with VCSC as a mentor to Haworth as he takes over the position of superintendent. Haworth starts July 1.
