Two people, including a suspected assailant, died and a third person was hospitalized Monday morning following a shooting in an Indianapolis suburb, police said.
Sgt. D.J. Schoeff of the Carmel Police Department said officers called to a neighborhood in the city just north of Indianapolis found two victims suffering from gunshot wounds about 8 a.m.
Investigators learned that the suspected shooter was still at large, and Schoeff said that when the suspect was located, one Carmel police officer fired shots. It wasn’t immediately clear how many shots were fired, if there was an exchange of gunfire and if the officer’s gunfire struck the suspect.
The suspect and one of the shooting victims later died, while the other shooting victim was hospitalized.
Schoeff said the officer who fired shots was not injured. He said all Carmel police officers wear body cameras.
“We know that an officer fired shots today. I don’t know how many. I know that the officer fired shots, and I know that we have two victims and then one suspect that has been shot,” he said.
The ages of the victims and suspect, and the circumstances of the shooting, were not immediately released.
