Doctor Says More Is Understood About Treating COVID-19 Now Than In March

Indiana has seen an uptick in the last month in COVID-19 positivity rates and hospitalizations.

White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci has warned that Indiana is among the states in danger of a more serious COVID-19 outbreak.

But IU Health infectious disease expert Dr. Tom Hrisomalos says six months of experience has taught doctors better treatment methods.

He says patients receive high-flow oxygen and doctors avoid putting them on ventilators unless absolutely necessary.

"We’re starting these anti-viral and anti-inflammatory drugs right away when people come into the hospital, and I think all of that–we’ve learned how to treat things better– all of that has made a difference,” he said.

Hrisomalos says mortality rates have remained low. As of July 31, there were 661 positive cases and 30 deaths in Monroe County.

He adds that health officials now understand the effectiveness of methods of prevention, like wearing a mask.
