Developers To Host Public Discussions About Former Bloomington Kmart Location

Developers will host multiple workshops later this month to discuss their plans for Bloomington’s former eastside Kmart location.

West-Lafayette based Trinitas Ventures plans to turn the site into a mixed-use development, which will include housing, retail, office space and restaurants.

Senior Vice President of Mixed-Use Development at Trinitas Ventures Aaron Bartels says the project also includes plans for a hotel, which he says will be needed with the new IU Health Bloomington Hospital slated to open on State Road 45/46 in 2020.

Bartels says the project will be compatible with the rest of the College Mall area.

“With Target and the other retail that’s already in the market, we would envision our development being complementary to that,” Bartels says.

The workshops will be held July 24 to 26 at Binford Elementary School. Trinitas Ventures will lead the planning workshops along with a master planning firm and a designing firm to engage with local residents, business, government officials and university stakeholders.

Bartels says after getting public feedback, the team will spend four to six weeks finalizing the details of their proposal.

Aaron is the web and software developer for IU Radio/TV Digital. He began working there in early 2018.
