Artists painted a mural depicting the words ‘Black Lives Matter’ on Indiana Avenue in downtown Indianapolis last weekend.
Indianapolis joins cities such as Seattle and New York in having a mural with the three words painted on a major street.
Harriet Watson is one of the artists who participated. She painted the ‘A’ in ‘matter.’
She says her contribution is inspired by the artist Faith Ringgold. Watson says Ringgold’s painting, “The Flag Is Bleeding” will be incorporated into her own design for the mural.
“I hope from my work they at least get the message that people in America are hurting and when we have justice, we will have peace,” Watson says.
Watson says she hopes the visibility of the mural will help the message stick in people’s minds.
“Growing up as a mixed person in Indiana, I’ve had a lot of tough experiences,” she says. “And I think it’s important to support the Black community and support everyone who needs it right now.”
Indy10 Black Lives Matter and other organizations coordinated the event.
