Three people died late Saturday after their vehicle went under water at a Lake Monroe boat ramp, officials said Sunday.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said it was investigating after witnesses reported seeing a vehicle slip into water at the Paynetown reservoir boat ramp.
The driver called for help and attempted to exit the vehicle, the DNR said. But witnesses were unable to get the occupants out in time, it said.
“Monroe County Dive Team responded and were able to locate and remove an adult male and female as well as a male child from the vehicle,” the DNR said in a statement.
“The adults were declared deceased at the scene. The child was transported to IU Health Bloomington and was declared deceased upon arrival,” it said.
The statement said that conservation officers were working with the Monroe County Coroner’s Office to identify and notify the next of kin.
Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields said the victims were a man, woman and child.
“We don’t have identification confirmed nor next of kin,” Shields said.
The DNR said the Perry Clear Creek Fire, IU Health EMS, and Monroe Fire were assisting.
