The City of Bloomington is joining a growing number of cities across the country testing wastewater for levels of coronavirus.
Carmel began testing a few months ago and was the first in Indiana to do so.
Both cities say they plan to base policy decisions on the results after gathering a baseline in each community.
Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton, said Bloomington will collect samples in specific locations to better analyze where infections are most prevalent in the city.
“Every two or three days you get a number and if you see a significant move in that number—up or down—it gives you some indication that the virus is growing or shrinking in that area,” Hamilton said.
Much of the program’s cost will be paid for by the state. Private labs will work with the University of Notre Dame to analyze the samples.
