The 24 people arrested Saturday came from Indiana and five other states and range in age from 18 to 30. Each has been charged with disorderly conduct. Governor Mitch Daniels said he was saddened by the vandalism, saying he respects the right to protest, but that this group went too far.
Indiana State Police First Sergeant Dave Bursten issued a statement denouncing those arrested as "protesters for hire." He says the group doesn't have a specific interest in I-69.
Two Bloomington residents were among those arrested. Alison Phillips, 20, and Colin Schoder-Ehri, 25, are charged with disorderly conduct. Indiana State Police say one of the protesters who has not identified herself jumped onto a Capitol Police Officer's back and was shocked with a Taser. She faces additional battery and resisting arrest charges.
