Indiana University's fall semester got off to a rough start Monday.

The first day of classes was marked by widespread issues with communication platforms Zoom and Canvas, some starting as early as 8 a.m.

IU's technology services webpage said the Zoom problems were caused by the video chat company's global outage Monday morning. Services were restored by 12:45 p.m.

However, some users were still experiencing difficulties with Canvas, the university's online course management system, as of early Monday afternoon. Canvas is used to distribute class information and assignments as well as to provide a means of communication between students and professors.

A Tweet from the university's information and technology services department said that all known issues were resolved by 3:30 p.m.

IU spokesperson Chuck Carney said the Canvas issue didn't affect all users.

"Some partial outages, but they've been working on that all morning as well," he said.

Carney said as of Monday afternoon, the university was unsure of what caused the problems with Canvas.

More IU classes are online this semester than normal due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
