I-69 opponents gathered outside a fundraiser for Indiana Governor Joe Kernan Monday evening in Indianapolis to demand the governor to reverse his position on the highway.
Indiana University student Kate Mobley says she will stand outside the Kickin' it for Kernan fundraiser geared toward youth voters in order to educate them about the Democratic Party's stance concering I-69. She says it's important to let other young voters know about the economic impact the highway could have on her hometown of Terre Haute.
Mobley says she supports an alternative highway 41-60 route for the interstate because it would boost the economically depressed area. She says although she has traditionally voted Democratic, the interstate project will prevent her from favoring Kernan in the upcoming election.
"I am unwilling to give my vote to a Democratic candidate who's supporting this issue. I feel like under the Democratic Governorship over the last 14 years, or 16 years with Evan Bayh the project has been perpetuated. So I feel like it's an issue that's killing the Democratic Party in the state."
Mobley says she and other citizens concerned about the impacts of I-69 will be a presence at many of Kernan's events throughout the fall.
