Indiana has seen record-high positive case counts this month, and deaths and hospitalizations return to numbers seen in May.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported 1,551 new positive and 48 new deaths Tuesday that increase state totals to 150,664 cases and 3,775. Seven of those new deaths increased the Oct. 16 death count to 31, which is the greatest number of deaths reported in a single day since May 20. People over 50 years old make up 97.2% of Indiana’s COVID-19 deaths but only 37.6% of cases.
Across the state, the ISDH reported 2,551,406 tests with a 6.7% seven-day positivity rate, and statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations hit 1,425 — its highest total since May 5.
Monroe County documented an additional 15 positive cases, according to ISDH data. The county-wide positive case rate rose to 3,207, while the death toll remained at 38. The county has a positivity rate of 3.1%. It has administered 60.2% of its 108,448 tests on individuals younger than 29 years old, and they make up 72.7% of positive cases. No one under 50 has died of COVID-19 in Monroe County.
