As COVID-19 hospitalizations in Indiana climb to almost 3,000, the Indiana State Department of Health reported a record-high 84 new COVID-19 deaths.
The number of daily coronavirus-related deaths has nearly quadrupled since this summer. Indiana averages nearly 40 COVID-19 deaths every day — similar to the number of deaths reported in April and May.
Along with the 84 new deaths, the ISDH reported Tuesday 5,541 new positive cases, increasing state totals to 262,207 cases and 4,770 deaths. Indiana has administered 3.6 million tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 12%. The state positivity rate has not reached this height since late April.

The ISDH reported 2,951 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus. Almost 37% of Indiana ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients with 25.2% still available.
Monroe County documented another 98 positive cases, according to ISDH data. This brings the county total to 4,593 cases, while the death toll remains at 42. Monroe County has not reported this many COVID-19 cases in one day since September, a couple weeks after IU students initially returned to Bloomington.
Monroe County has administered 156,130 tests with a 5.7% seven-day positivity rate. And IU plans to offer free exit testing for students returning home for the holidays.
