Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton is urging residents to stay home for the holidays rather than put other family members at risk of COVID-19.
Indiana infections, hospitalizations, and death rates are at an all-time high since the pandemic took its toll in March. Hamilton says we’ve all had to learn to be different this year, and holiday gatherings should be another adjustment.
“It's really trying to stay close to your family household members," Hamilton said. "I heard an epidemiologist over the weekend, say just don't share air with people that you don't live with. Don't be in a place because sharing that air is how this disease passes.”

Hamilton says even if you get a negative COVID test, you can still be infectious … or could be infected within an hour. He says it’s not a moral failing to cancel family gathering this year, it’s just about protecting others.
Indiana health officials reported 60 more coronavirus deaths Wednesday. Some of those deaths occurred Sunday, making it the single deadliest day during the pandemic.
