Thousands of Hoosiers remain hospitalized with COVID-19, as the State Department of Health recorded 6,983 new cases and 40 more deaths Saturday.
The latest records bring Indiana's total case number to 289,183 and the confirmed death toll to 4,992. As of Saturday, 3,168 patients were hospitalized.

Like elsewhere in the U.S., Indiana is seeing an increase in coronavirus cases, deaths, positivity rates and hospitalizations that exceed numbers in the spring.
Saturday's numbers showed that 34.6% of the state's 2,151 ICU beds were being used by patients with COVID-19-related illnesses, while 22.4% were still available.
And as of noon Saturday, 16.9% of the state's 2,802 total ventilators were being used by COVID-19 patients, while 72.7% were still available.
Indiana has administered 3,846,380 tests. That number includes tests run by the state, the Centers For Disease Control And Prevention, and some private laboratories. The number of tests that have returned positive over the past week is 12.2%.
In Monroe County, the total case number rose by 151 to 4,128, and the county death toll remained the same at 45 on Saturday.
Some 60,277 Monroe County residents have been tested so far. Gov. Eric Holcomb indicated he would continue quarantining after being exposed to COVID-19, despite negative test results Friday.
The governor’s office announced Tuesday that several members of the governor’s security detail tested positive. State Health Commissioner Dr. Kris Box advised both Holcomb and his wife Janet to begin quarantine immediately.
