Indiana set a new record for the most COVID-19 cases confirmed in a single day, only one day after Gov. Eric Holcomb said state officials are bracing for post-Thanksgiving numbers.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported Thursday 8,527 new COVID-19 cases — 8,514 of which were confirmed on Dec. 2. This is only the second time the state has recorded more than 8,000 new cases in a single day. The state also documented 60 new COVID-19 deaths, increasing state totals to 359,430 cases and 5,740 deaths.
Indiana averages nearly 60 deaths a day, while 3,362 Hoosiers are hospitalized due to COVID-19. According to ISDH numbers, COVID-19 patients occupy 45.2% of Indiana ICU beds, with 20.5% still available.

The state has administered more than 4.4 million tests with an 11.4% seven-day positivity rate.
In Monroe County, the ISDH confirmed 134 new positive cases and one new death, increasing county totals to 6,048 cases and 54 deaths.
Monroe County has conducted 182,395 tests with an 8.1% seven-day positivity rate, but the county is currently administering nearly a quarter of the tests it did in mid-November, since IU students ended in-person classes. The university frequently reported a 1% positivity rate, but the decrease in testing — and subsequent fewer negative test results — likely corresponds with the 55.5% increase in the state’s positivity rate since Nov. 2.
