Drug maker AstraZeneca wants to enroll about 1,500 individuals for its COVID-19 vaccine trials at its site with the IU School of Medicine.
The company’s trials were paused by the FDA in September and then allowed to restart in October.
Dr. Cynthia Brown is the principal investigator at the site. She says the FDA has expedited the process to approve vaccines but that won’t make them any less safe.
She says drug companies Pfizer and Moderna both got high turnout for participation in their trials, and her study is seeing similar interest.
Brown says about 30,000 people participated in Pfizer and Moderna's trials each, and AstraZeneca wants to enroll 44,000 in its trials.
“That’s three large trials within less than six months, there will be 100,000 individuals essentially enrolled in these large trials.”
Brown says the FDA halted AstraZeneca’s trials to examine its data more carefully, which is a normal part of medical review and a sign that any vaccine approved will be safe.
IU School of Medicine is one of 100 sites in the AstraZeneca vaccine trial.
