Indiana State University marked the official reopening of the Hulman Center after a two-year, $50-million renovation.
The 10,200-seat facility opened in 1973 hosting countless events, including the 1979 men’s basketball team that featured Larry Bird and finished second in the nation.
The state appropriated $37.5 million for the project. In 2017, officials dissolved a joint plan to renovate the Hulman Center and build an adjoining convention center.
The county is moving forward on the convention center project on its own a block south with plans to include a Larry Bird museum.

The renovation includes a new exterior facade and glass entrance, new restrooms and concession stands, new suite overlooking the floor, new lighting, and all blue seats – replacing the orange seats on part of the second level.
Hulman Center will have its first ISU event after the renovation when the Sycamore women’s basketball team faces Murray State Friday night, but due to the pandemic will be open to essential personnel only.
