The end of 2020 has proven to be the deadliest season of the pandemic in Indiana.
The Indiana State Department of Health reported Tuesday 5,457 new positive cases and 124 new COVID-19 deaths, increasing state totals to 392,663 cases and 6,109 deaths. These new numbers make Dec. 2 the single deadliest day of the pandemic in Indiana with 74 deaths occurring on that Wednesday.
Nearly 60 people die every day of COVID-19 in Indiana compared to around 40 at thebeginning of the pandemic. But positive case counts have increased nearly tenfold. While only about 1% of Hoosiers who test positive for COVID-19 die from the virus, uncontrolled viral spread has exposed more Hoosiers to the virus than in previous seasons thus killing more people.
The ISDH reported 3,250 Hoosiers are hospitalized due to the virus, and COVID-19 patients occupy 43.8% of the state’s ICU beds. About 21% remain available.
Indiana has administered 4.6 million tests with a 14% seven-day positivity rate.
In Monroe County, the ISDH reported 104 news cases and 2 new deaths, which include four cases among Bloomington Fire Department employees. These numbers bring county totals to 6,500 cases and 60 deaths. Monroe County has reported eight COVID-19 deaths this month, putting it on track to surpass its total of 13 virus-related deaths in November.
Monroe County has administered 191,827 tests with a 10.2% seven-day positivity rate that forced MCCSC to transition to virtual learning.
