December On Track To Become Monroe County’s Deadliest Month Of The Pandemic

Monroe County has experienced 10 COVID-19 deaths so far in December, pushing the county closer to surpassing June and November’s record 13 deaths.

The Indiana State Department of Health reported Wednesday 88 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths in the county, increasing the totals to 6,586 cases and 62 deaths. Monroe County saw a spike in virus-related deaths in mid-November that has persisted. The county now averages a death a day. Everyone who has died of the virus has been over the age of 50, despite accounting for only about 20% of cases.

Monroe County has administered 194,393 tests with a 9.4% seven-day positivity rate — down from its 11.2% peak on Nov. 29.

Unlike Monroe County, the state positivity rate continues to rise. The seven-day rate currently rests at 14.2% after the state administered more than 4.7 million tests on 2.3 million individuals.

The ISDH reported Wednesday 5,853 cases and 98 new deaths, totaling 398,417 cases and 6,207 deaths statewide since the pandemic began. Last Wednesday remains the state’s deadliest COVID-19 day with 75 Hoosiers dying on Dec. 2.

According to ISDH data, 3,244 Hoosiers are hospitalized due to the virus, and COVID-19 patients occupy 43.5% of Indiana ICU beds. About 21% of beds remain available.
