Indiana breached 6,500 COVID-19 deaths on Monday — less than a week after rocketing past 6,000 last Tuesday.
December has delivered record-high case numbers and deaths, with the Indiana State Department of Health reporting last week more deaths in a single week than ever before. On Monday, the ISDH recorded 5,050 new cases and 35 additional deaths, increasing state totals to 430,401 and 6,530. Current data indicates the state averages between 60 to 70 COVID-19 deaths a day.

The state has administered more than 4.9 million COVID-19 tests with a 12.7% seven-day positivity rate that has decreased slightly since peaking at 14.1% a week after Thanksgiving.
COVID-19 patients occupy 40.4% of Indiana ICU beds, and 3,072 Hoosiers are hospitalized due to the virus.
In Monroe County, the ISDH reported 77 new cases and three deaths, totaling 7,009 cases and 71 deaths since the outbreak began. The county has administered 202,571 tests with a seven-day positivity rate of 7.3%. Monroe County has reported 19 deaths so far in December.
