The state health department reported Thursday 6,458 new positive cases and 79 new deaths in Indiana, which is consistent with data recorded over the past month.
Hoosier COVID-19 numbers appear to shift only slightly, as Indiana prepares for more vaccines; the state is averaging 6,000 cases and 75 deaths every day. Various hospitals around the state began administering the vaccine to frontline healthcare workers this week, and Monroe County residents may be able to get the vaccine by February or March. But both the state and county continue documenting unwavering case counts and increasing deaths.

Newly reported data from the ISDH increased state totals to 447,190 cases and 6,860 deathsand, after administering more than 5.1 million tests, the state has a 12.4% positivity rate. ISDH data show 3,147 Hoosiers hospitalized due to the virus. More than 31% of ICU beds are occupied by COVID-19 patients and about 20% of beds still are available.
In Monroe County, the ISDH confirmed 79 new COVID-19 cases and one new death, totaling 7,236 cases and 79 deaths. At the current rate, the county could see 100 COVID-19 deaths by the end of the month. County health officials have administered more than 200,000 tests, with a current seven-day positivity rate of 7.3%.
