Seven Monroe County township trustees have approved a resolution urging the Bloomington mayor to work with county and township governments when making decisions for people living in poverty.
The message comes after the city removed tents and camping structures in Seminary Park last week. For the last several months, public spaces such as Seminary Park have become dwellings for people experiencing homelessness.
The resolution asks that city government not take further action that would put vulnerable groups and the community as a whole at risk.
Forrest Gilmore is the Executive Director at Beacon Inc. He says the township trustees aren’t alone in their request.
“Just wide spread concern…a number of township trustees have come out against that action. The Democratic Party of Monroe County executive team has expressed sincere concern about that action.”
The township trustees say breaking up camps of people experiencing homelessness during a pandemic ignores CDC guidelines.
Gilmore says he hopes the city will reconsider its approach, and put a moratorium during the pandemic on breaking up camps of people experiencing homelessness.
