Monroe County’s main COVID-19 vaccination site will move from the convention center to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall at the end of the month.
County health officials said vaccine appointments at the current location are booked through the end of March.
"The Convention Center is open for first doses through March and we will complete those vaccinations for anybody who needs a second dose," said Penny Caudill, county health administrator. "In the next few weeks, you’ll start to see vaccination appointments open up at IU’s site."
Caudill said the convention center is the perfect location for the small number of doses the county is receiving right now, but a larger site is needed moving forward.
"It’s set up very well, but if you think about tripling or quadrupling the number of people that you’re getting through, then that space would be much more difficult," said Caudill. "It really is just about capacity and giving us the opportunity to partner with the university."
IU said it plans to open the Assembly Hall site on Monday, March 29.
"We’ve been told that we’ll have the supply and we’re getting our people trained up to do that as we hopefully become a regional resource site for vaccinations," said Kirk White, IU’s head of COVID-19 response.
For members in the community who are homebound, the county health department is partnering with both the Bloomington Fire Department and the Monroe Fire Protection District to provide home visits.
“Next week, we will start training our fire department partners in terms of the process," said Caudill.
