Students Struggling In School Could Still Be Held Back This Year

Schools around the state are considering whether or not they should hold back students who are behind this year. Lack of in-school instruction caused by the pandemic has made it difficult for many students to learn.

Because of this, schools across the state are waiting to see how many students will need to repeat their current academic year. Many school districts last year implemented policies that no students would be held back due to the pandemic.

Every school district in the state has its own policy on the matter.

In the Monroe County Community School Corporation, Fairview Elementary School Principal Marti Colglazier said deciding if students will be held back will be based on specific, individual factors.

"We are not doing 'everybody goes on' kind of thing, no matter what," Colglazier said. "It will be based on evidence, need, conferencing with the families."

She said Fairview students who are struggling will be given as much help as possible to help them catch up before the end of the year.

Colglazier said last year, teachers reviewed material from the previous year for students to help catch them up.

"Kids did start the year a bit more behind than normal, and so we did have teachers in, say, fifth grade teaching fourth quarter fourth grade skills," she said. "Those kinds of things to try to catch kids up."

Fairview will be doing the same type of review this coming school year as well.
