Lawrence, and Brown counties joined a growing list of counties around Indiana that reached the “red” advisory level according to the Indiana Department of Health.

Brown County’s 7-day positivity rate jumped is greater than 21%, according to IDOH. The 7-day positivity rate is calculated by taking the number of positive tests and dividing it by the number of tests administered.

Lawrence County’s 7-day positivity rate is 18.3% according to IDOH.

Despite the increase, Brown County officials do not plan on implementing mask mandates. All three County Commissioners issued a statement on the matter earlier this month.

“In Brown County, we believe health decisions are best made by individuals in consultation with their medical professionals. Common sense should be exercised. The county has worked diligently to ensure that vaccines and testing are available to those who want them. Masks may be worn by anyone who wants to wear one, anyone who chooses to forego masks and vaccinations has the right to do so.”

Brown County officials will allow individual businesses to enforce masking within their establishments.
