Former Indiana University Trustee P.A. Mack, Dies Thursday Night

Former Indiana University Trustee P.A. Mack, who served as chief of staff to U.S. Sen. Birch Bayh, died Thursday night.

Mack was fixture at IU cultural and athletic events and in IU-related organizations since being appointed a trustee by then Gov. Evan Bayh in 1992. He served as a trustee for six years.

He was chairman of the board of the IU Credit Union, a board member of the Hoosiers for Higher Education Steering Committee, a board member of Clarian Health Partners, which is now IU Health;  and the first chairman of the national board of visitors for the Center on Philanthropy, which is now the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy.

Mack also served on the Kelley School of Business Dean’s Council and the board of the IU Foundation, among other roles.

He’s the recipient of many awards from the university, including the IU Bicentennial Medal in 2019 and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2002.

His affiliation with Birch Bayh began when both were undergraduates at Purdue University. They remained close friends and Mack served as executive director for the Bayh for President Campaign Committee and as chief of staff for the U.S. Senator from 1971-1979. A banker by vocation, he became chairman of the National Credit Union Administration Board in 1979 and served as president of the AARP Federal Credit Union from 1987-1990.

Mack was 91 years old.

His career in print journalism spanned 43 years and included reporting, editing and leadership positions in news and sports. He teaches as an adjunct faculty member at the IU Media School. For 20 years, he has been co-host of WFIU's Noon Edition.
