Waste water COVID-19 rates up in the city, Bloomington mayor reports

Officials from the city of Bloomington, Monroe County, and Indiana University are reporting increases in COVID-19 cases this past week.

Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton said positive testing results for COVID-19 at city waste-water treatment plants are increasing significantly.

“The last few weeks we’ve had 22 or 28 at Blucher," he said. "The most recent number was 180.”

At the Dillman plant, which Hamilton says covers the south and west parts of Bloomington, rates of 80 and 140 were reported recently. But this week’s rate was 170.

“Again, we don’t know all the science of this but I did want to share that those waste water plants testing has showed a significant bump up,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton said the detectable limit is ten copies of the RNA per 100 milliliters.

He added there have been periods when COVID levels were undetectable at some plants.
