IU removes ethical exemption from COVID-19 vaccine exemptions

Indiana University removed the ethical exemption from its vaccination form in November to comply with new federal vaccination mandates, IU spokesperson Chuck Carney said.

Those whose ethical exemptions have already been accepted will not be affected.

The removal was made to meet changes to the government contractor  guidelines, which state, “Covered contractors must ensure that all covered contractor employees are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless the employee is legally entitled to an accommodation.”

IU still  offers religious exemptions, medical exemptions with documentation and an online program exemption for students who are in a 100 percent online program with no on-campus component.

IU Bloomington currently has a 95 percent vaccination rate, and few are not already vaccinated or exempted, Carney said.

The removal of the ethical exemption only applies to those reporting their vaccination status moving forward.
