This southern Indiana town is paying the utility bills for all its residents

The City of Lawrenceburg, Indiana is paying all resident utility bills for the month of December.

The city received more than $1 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds and is directing the money into its utility assistance program and small business grants. Under the utilities program, the city’s 5,500 residents will see their Lawrenceburg Municipal Utilities accounts show a zero balance for the month. Existing debts are not included.

The city enacted a similar assistance program in June and July 2020.

“We’re trying to cover everyone as much as we can and trying to share the wealth, so to speak,” Mayor Kelly Mollaun said.

Additionally, he said small businesses can apply for a $1,000 grant, which the city also offered in 2020. Last year, 77 businesses took advantage of the program, and 75 of them are still operating.

“We know it was a program that helped retain our businesses through tough times,” Mollaun said. “So, we thought with this extra money we would help our businesses as well.”

The deadline for small businesses to apply for the grant is Dec. 20.
