Former IU quarterback Penix reunites with DeBoer at Washington

Michael Penix Jr. is going from the Hoosiers to the Huskies.

The former Indiana quarterback announced on Instagram Tuesday he was transferring to the University of Washington, where he will be reunited with former IU offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer.

DeBoer, who was named the Huskies' head coach last month, coached Penix at IU in 2019. That season, Penix set a school-record for completion percentage. But, as with each of his four seasons at IU, it was cut short by injury.

Penix finished his IU career completing 342 of 576 passes for 4,197 yards and 29 touchdowns with 15 interceptions.

His best season came in the pandemic shortened 2020 campaign, when he started the first six games and was named second team All-Big Ten. But, after throwing for 1,645 yards and 14 touchdowns with just four interceptions, he missed the final two games with a knee injury.

This past season, Penix threw for 939 yards and four touchdowns, but was intercepted seven times, before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury in the fifth game.

Penix started 17 of the 20 games he appeared in at Indiana. He never played more than six games in any one season.

Last Monday, Penix entered the NCAA’s transfer portal. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
