Members of the Monroe County Democratic Party on Sunday selected a Black woman for council member in District 4 for the first time.

Jennifer Crossley will complete the term of Eric Spoonmore, who stepped down to head the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce.

Crossley was already serving as the local Democratic Party chair.

“Today was history, and I am just very thankful and excited for the opportunity to serve and just ready to get to work,” Crossley said shortly after the vote.

“I’m just willing to be used as a sponge to absorb everything that is related to the position and willing to serve and to do what is needed for the better of District 4.”

The Monroe County Republicans also made history over the weekend.

The party chose a new chair at a vote in Ellettsville on Saturday: Taylor Bryant will be the youngest chairwoman in Indiana state history.

Bryant is a pre-law student at Indiana University.
