State reports 170 COVID deaths over holiday weekend

Indiana’s Department of Health reported 170 COVID deaths today; they were spread across the holiday weekend when reporting was interrupted.

That brings the total of Hoosiers who have died from the virus to more than 18,250.

The news comes as the more infectious omicron variant is threatening an already tattered hospital system.

The number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 climbed past 3,000 again on Tuesday. While those numbers are slightly below last winter’s peak, health officials fear it could quickly surpass last winter’s surge, as the number of unvaccinated patients remains high.

Fewer than 15 percent of the state’s ICU beds are currently available.

The state logged over 5,800 new positive cases today.
