Democrats try to turn national legislation into local momentum

A few dozen Democrats turned out Tuesday night to gather as part of the state party’s ‘Jobs Tour’ at Bloomington’s Switchyard Brewery.

The events, held across Indiana, seek to highlight how the party’s national platform is helping Hoosiers.

While Democrats don’t hold the majority of elected regional or statewide offices in Indiana, attendees like the party’s labor caucus chair John Hooker, believe those national agenda items have weight.

“State leadership has currently done a really good job of accepting money from Washington D.C., and calling it their own,” he said.

Hooker says one example is the state’s READI Grant program funded exclusively from the federal government’s COVID relief efforts.

Late last year when asked what credit Democrats and President Biden should take over the state’s $500 million program for local community development, Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb said Democrats “can take any credit they want.”
