March 14 proclaimed ‘Local Hand Sanitizer Day’ in Bloomington

Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton has proclaimed March 14 as “Local Hand Sanitizer Day.”

At the start of the pandemic, hand sanitizer was in short supply. Staff at local distillery Cardinal Spirits realized they had access to high-proof alcohol and quickly switched gears from spirits to sanitizer. At its peak, the distillery would produce 10,000-gallon batches, and now it’s forever recognized for the efforts.

To mark the proclamation, Cardinal Spirits is giving away unlimited hand sanitizer from March 14-31. Co-founder and president Jeff Wuslich says it’s their way of giving back.

We’re always deeply engaged in our community, and we want to make sure we help everybody that we can,” Wuslich said.

Individuals can make orders in person now or pre-order starting Sunday at the Cardinal Spirits website. Bulk orders for groups and organizations can also be purchased online.

Wuslich says that while the city’s recognition is a win for small local businesses, there is still more to be done.

“There’s lots of restaurants and bars and small shops that still need your support,” Wuslich said. “We’re definitely one. So, whenever you get the chance, shop local.”
