Man identified in Tuesday's fatal apartment fire on the outskirts of Bloomington

A fire at an apartment complex just outside Bloomington killed a 43-year-old man Tuesday night.

Monroe County Coroner Joani Stalcup identified him as Bobby Coker Jr. of Bloomington. His preliminary cause of death was ruled asphyxia due to smoke inhalation.

The Monroe Fire Protection District responded to a fire at the Woodland Springs apartment complex shortly after 10 p.m.

After suppressing the fire, crews began searching apartments and found one resident dead in the unit where the fire began.

According to a news release from the Coroner's Office, the state fire marshal and Monroe Fire District fire investigator determined the fire was accidental and was caused by unattended cooking on the stove.

The Bloomington City Fire Department was called in to help with the blaze, which damaged three-to-five units. Several other apartments sustained smoke and water damage.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital for a minor injury and evaluation but was treated and released. No other injuries were reported but one cat was given oxygen and appeared to recover.
