Two Indiana University deans have announced they will leave their jobs this summer.

Monday’s university online newsletter IU News Today said Monday that Idalene “Idie” Kesner will step down as dean of the Kelley School of Business and Austen Parrish will leave his job at Bloomington campus’s Maurer School of Law.

Kesner was the first woman chosen to lead the Kelley School when she became dean in May 2013. She also holds the titles of Frank P. Popoff Chair of Strategic Management and professor of management. Her areas of research include corporate boards of directors, corporate governance, leadership succession and mergers and acquisitions.

Kesner holds a Ph.D. and MBA from IU and an undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University. She taught at the University of North Carolina for 12 years before returning to IU, where she’s been a teacher and administrator since 1995.

Her last day at dean is scheduled for July 31, when she will return to teaching. Her university bio lists 19 teaching awards she was awarded at IU between 1995 and 2006.

Parrish will leave the Maurer School of Law in early July to become dean of the University of California-Irvine School of Law. The move will mark his return to the west coast, where he was a faculty member at Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles before coming to IU in 2014.

His time at IU has included a $60 million capital campaign and the launch of several new clinics and public interest programs to engage students and serve communities.

Parrish also holds the title of James H. Rudy Professor of Law. According to his university bio, his teaching and research specialties are transnational law and litigation, and “the role that national courts and domestic institutions play in solving global challenges.”

Both schools plan to have interim deans in place soon.

Bob Zaltsberg was editor of The Herald-Times in Bloomington for 33 years before his retirement on Jan. 31, 2019. His career in print journalism spanned 43 years and included reporting, editing and leadership positions in news and sports. He teaches as an adjunct faculty member at the IU Media School. For 20 years, he has been co-host of WFIU's Noon Edition.
