Monroe County prohibits guns in two buildings

Hoosiers will have easier access to handguns beginning later this week, but that doesn’t mean firearms are allowed everywhere.

Monroe County commissioners Wednesday updated the list of county-owned buildings where firearms are prohibited.

Already included are the justice center, courthouse, Curry Building, and old Johnson’s Hardware building. However, the list now includes the health services building at 119 W. Seventh Street and youth services bureau at 615 W. Adams Street. All six buildings on the list contain courtrooms of some type, qualifying them for additional protection under state law.

“It’s really important for all of us and our safety,” commissioner Julie Thomas said.

Under the same state law, Monroe County prohibits “the intentional display of a firearm, whether licensed or unlicensed at a Monroe County public meeting.”

The commissioners’ unanimous decision comes as Hoosiers will no longer need a permit to carry a handgun in public starting Friday.
