According to public campaign donation data, Indiana’s agricultural industry heavily favors donations to Republicans over Democrats.
This year in Indiana, the agriculture industry donated $118,510 to political campaigns. Of that total, $6,410 went to Democratic candidates; just five percent of all donations.
These numbers are a more extreme version a larger national trend in state-level midterms throughout the Midwest. According to a report from Investigate Midwest, leading agricultural corporations and the general agriculture industry tend to throw their support behind Republicans, incumbents and those in higher state offices.
More than 80% of these donors across the country gave to Republican candidates.
The largest ag industry donor in Indiana was Reynolds American with $33,000. Their donations were split between Democratic and Republican candidates, with $2,500 going to Democrats and $30,500 going to Republicans.
Other large donors were the Indiana Agribusiness Foundation, the Indiana Farm Bureau, the Indiana Pork Producers Association, and Phillip Morris USA.
