As of Monday, a brush fire on the east side of Brown County State Park grew to about 100 acres. By that evening at 5:15, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources reported that they had cut a fire break around the entire fire.
According to the DNR, the blaze began around 5:30 Sunday night. Local fire departments and the DNR fire headquarters assessed the brush fire then as “large but slow moving.”
The DNR’s fire unit was demobilized Sunday night but returned with 10 fire fighters Monday morning. DNR officials say they are not seeking help from local departments because of the difficult terrain in the park.
DNR spokesperson Marty Benson said that by 2 p.m. they had partially created a fire break, which was completed by 5:15.
