Shruti Rana announces bid for Bloomington City Council District 5

Shruti Rana announced her candidacy Thursday for District 5 of the Bloomington City Council.

Rana currently serves as the Democratic representative on the Monroe County Election Board and is a member of the Board of Public Safety.

The newly drawn District 5 seat has no incumbent. Its area is in the southwest part of town, including parts of what were previously districts three, four, and five.

Rana is senior assistant dean of curricular and undergraduate affairs in the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies and professor at the Maurer School of Law.

In her announcement, she said she wants to focus on promoting civil and human rights for residents. She intends to do this by working on areas such as expanding resources for childcare and healthcare and supporting sustainable development.

In other districts, incumbers will have to decide whether they want to run in new districts. Sue Sgambelluri from the old District 2 and Kate Rosenbarger from the old District 1 will both be in the newly drawn District 2.

Steve Volan (District 6) and Dave Rollo (District 5) will both be in the new District 4.

The new maps also created a new District 6, located in central Bloomington, which has no incumbent.
