Sheriff deputy injured in crash with suspected drunk driver

A Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering from a minor injury from when a suspected drunk driver crashed head-on with his patrol vehicle late Tuesday on Bloomington’s south side.

The accused driver wasn’t hurt but was transported to a local hospital as a precaution, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The deputy had a cut to his wrist.

It all started about 11:51 p.m. when the deputy was patrolling West Country Club Drive near South Banta Avenue and saw a Jeep with its hazard lights flashing.

Both the deputy and the driver of the Jeep slowed down when suddenly, the driver of a Honda Civic closely behind the Jeep crossed the center line and struck the deputy’s patrol vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.

Dashcam footage provided by the sheriff’s office shows the Honda slowly reversing immediately following the crash. The video then ends.

The suspect driver stayed at the scene and consented to a blood draw, the sheriff’s office said.

An investigation found the Jeep’s driver activated their hazards to warn the deputy that the suspect was possibly driving erratically.

The suspect was later booked into Monroe County Jail on suspicion of aggressive driving and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

As of Wednesday afternoon, court records showed criminal charges had not been filed against him.
