People at a nearby school heard the derailment and called 911.

A 58-year-old man was hit and killed by a train Monday night near 7th Street and Hopewell Street.

According to a release from the Bloomington Police Department, the train’s engineer was heading northeast when he saw an object in the middle of the tracks. He told officers he blew his horn, but the object didn’t move.

The engineer activated the emergency breaks but was unable to stop the train before it collided with the object. The train eventually came to a halt.

Then the engineer left the train and headed back to the site of the collision, where he discovered he’d hit a pedestrian.

Police initially responded at the intersection of 3rd Street and Muller Parkway before heading in the direction of the body.

The man’s identity will not be released until the coroner identifies next of kin.

The incident follows several train deaths in Indiana last month, including two Anderson brothers whose car was struck in Madison County, and a Shelburn woman who died in a hospital shortly after being struck on foot

According to the Federal Railroad Administration, of the 111 people struck by trains in Indiana last year, 20 were killed.
