Monroe County health officer resigns; successor appointed

A long-time top official with the Monroe County Health Department employee has resigned.

Thomas Sharp resigned from his position this week after nearly five decades of service. He started as health officer in 1976 and was re-appointed in November 2021, according to the health department.

His reisgnation is effective April 30.

The county board of health unanimously accepted Sharp’s resignation and appointed Clark Brittain as his successor during a Thursday meeting that lasted just over two minutes.

The board had no other business for public discussion Thursday and adjourned immediately afterward. Members held an executive session, which is not open to the public, beforehand.

Brittain’s appointment will have to be approved by the county commissioners.

The county health officer is responsible for appointing a public health administrator, public health nurses, environmental health specialists, computer programs, clerks and other personnel to local health departments, according to state law.

Brittain is a local obstetrician-gynecologist and has worked for Indiana University’s School of Medicine as an adjunct clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology.
