City code to allow vehicles with 6 unpaid citations to be towed

A change in Bloomington city code will go into effect next month that allows vehicles with six or more unpaid citations to be towed.

The change will go into effect June 12 after being approved by members of city council late last year.

The city said its parking services division will notify motorists with multiple citations via email and U.S. mail before the code is implemented.

When issuing a fifth citation, parking officials will notice the vehicle owner with a neon green “Immediate Action Required Notification,” the city says. The notification will provide the vehicle owner with steps to take to avoid having their vehicle towed

The city’s code says the maximum flat fee for towing is $135. Vehicle owners may be billed an extra $25 for special treatment, including dollying, and another $25 for each 24-hour storage period following the first 24 hours after the vehicle is impounded.

Information about what to do when a vehicle gets towed is available on the city’s website. Customers can also reach parking services at 812-349-3436 or customer.service@bloomington.in.gov for more information.
